Bristol City Council has awarded Chipside a contract to deploy up to two million digital parking permits a year through the MiPermit system. The service will enable city residents and visitors to buy, manage and renew permits electronically.

Chipside is a provider of parking and traffic management IT to more than 160 UK local authorities. Paul Moorby OBE, chief executive of Chipside, said: “We are delighted to win a contract with Bristol City Council that will not only strengthen MiPermit’s position in the South West as the premier digital permits brand, but also give us the ground space to contribute innovative technology to an already-celebrated connected city.

“The diversity of the issues tackled through smart city technology is an indication of the potential of connected public services to improve residents’ lives.”

Chipside provides digital ticketing and permitting services for local and national governments. It currently delivers digital tickets and permits to around half of the UK’s local authorities, predominantly to enable digital and app-based parking payment and permit services.

Its services are used by more than three million people in the UK and internationally. The company has 50 employees and operations in the UK and Asia.

Bristol topped Navigant Consulting’s UK Smart Cities list in 2017 and beat Barcelona, Dubai and New York to win the Smart City Award (Judges’ Choice) at the GSMA’s 2018 Global Mobile Awards (The GLOMOs), with central government funding from the Smart Cities Agenda, the city’s ‘Bristol is Open’ initiative now offers innovators a testbed to develop disruptive solutions to city challenges.

• Chipside won the WITSA Global ICT Excellent Award. The company was also a finalist in the technology business category of the British Business Awards.
